The report card is in for the Arizona Cardinals following their 7-6 loss to the New York Jets yesterday. May I have the envelope please?:
Offense: F -
This was one of the worst offensive performances in the history of the NFL. Zero for 15 on third downs? You have got to be kidding. Rookie quarterback Ryan Lindley simply does not look ready to start in the league. He had just 72 yards passing and was constantly overthrowing his wide receivers. You really have to feel sorry for Larry Fitzgerald, who had once catch. His talent is being wasted by horrific QB play. Beanie Wells has 22 yards on 15 carries. This was an embarrassing effort in every sense of the word. How could Ken Whisenhunt not possibly replace Lindley with John Skelton? He certainly could not have done worse. Brutal.
Ray Horton's unit gave it their all again, forcing four turnovers, including two interceptions by former Jet Kerry Rhodes. Patrick Peterson had a beautiful interception, showing great athletic ability. Linebacker Daryl Washington was all over the field with a team-leading eight tackles and a fumble recovery. The Cards recorded three sacks. It's a shame they are getting no help whatsoever on the offensive side of the ball.
Special Teams: B+
Rashad Johnson had the highlight play of the game, rambling 40 yards on a fake punt deep in their own territory. A gutsy call by Whisenhunt. Punter Dave Zastudil was solid if not spectacular, averaging 44.8 yards per punt on 10 boots. Wow, 10 punts. That's the kind of game it was. Former Jet Jay Feely connected on both of his field goal attempts (48 and 35 yards). Arizona held Joe McKnight to a 27-yard kickoff return, That's pretty good considering McKnight is one of the premier kick returners in the business.
