The four-year veteran spent three weeks with the Pittsburgh Steelers before being waived. In order to make room for Hoyer, the Red Birds placed center Rich Ohrnberger on injured reserve .
Hoyer, a Michigan State product, spent the last three seasons as a backup QB with the New England Patriots. The North Olmstead, Ohio native has thrown for 286 yards in 13 games in his NFL career with one touchdown and one interception. Don't be surprised if he starts on Sunday in Glendale against the Detroit Lions in place of the very ineffective John Skelton.
Ohrnberger suffered a sprained right knee against Seattle last Sunday. Ohmberger played in all 13 games this season, including four starts.
In other news, nose tackle Dan Williams suffered a hamstring injury against the Seahawks and did not return. He will be evaluated this week and his status for this Sunday's home contest against Detroit has not been determined yet.
Wide receiver Early Doucet sustained a concussion against Seattle and will also be evaluated. He will be going through the NFL's protocol in dealing with concussions and must be cleared after a series of tests before he can resume playing.
